So I didn't see a section called ask your stupid questions here, so I'm posting in this forum, hope its ok.

So I've got Revv's ol 900 and thought to myself, this ol girl needs to go back to the strip.
Problem. Never been there myself.
Been practicing launches (though at a much slower speed than an actual track) around town when there are no cars around and so far have pretty much only successfully crushed my nuts on the tank when I killed it.

So my question.

Does anyone have some tips to share with a new guy looking to get started in going to the strip?

One of the first questions to be answered in GrudgeBike Magazine will be launching, and getting a good 60ft time.

To go ahead and answer your question though:

The bike you are riding is on a short wheelbase. It will wheelie without thinking about it.

I would ease to the beam, just barely tripping the second pre-stage light. This will give you a little error room, but not much.

Be aware of your body position. You want to get as close to the tank as possible (hope you don't want kids). Lean as far forward as you can, getting your weight forward while you get into a tuck position.

If everything is level you will not need to touch a brake of any sort for your launch. Pull the clutch in and get the RPMs to 4000. You will want to let the clutch lever out slightly, just enough to feel the clutch trying to engage.

Once you see the go light, begin twisting the throttle and releasing the clutch at the same time. You should be completely off the clutch in 10 - 15 feet.

By the time you hit the 60ft mark (timing lights) you should have the throttle in its wide open position (If not wide open, as close as possible).

You want to reduce wheelies as much as possible. It takes time to keep the front wheel in the air. The timing lights also miss the front wheel and only record the rear when the bike is in the air, which gives an illusion of a slower time.

The ideal launch will loft the front wheel off the ground about 1" - 2".

Launching takes a lot of practice. As you improve move your RPMs up to 4500, then 5000, and possibly 5500. Depending upon the bike, higher RPMs are needed to launch successfully.

Also, launching in the street will rarely give you steady improvements. You need to be able to see your reaction time and your 60ft time.

Don't worry about getting low numbers at first. Just keep trying to improve. Before long you will launch a bike with ease. It will become as natural as walking.

Feel free to ask questions. We will do our best to answer them.

next thing i would say is to study...it always helps to find a style...even if u have to imitate your favorite racer....watch transitions and hit all points...FOCUS and practice, practice, practice
